Oracle Cloud Always Free: What Is Included and Where the Limits Are
What Oracle Cloud's Always Free tier includes, how it differs from the 30-day trial, and the home region, capacity and idle limits to plan around.
What Oracle Cloud Infrastructure offers, how its pricing and Always Free resources work, which workloads suit it best and what to plan before signing up.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is Oracle’s public cloud, and this Oracle Cloud Infrastructure overview covers its services, pricing model and best-fit workloads. OCI is strongest for database-centric and enterprise applications, particularly those already running on Oracle Database, and it is also known among developers for its Always Free resources.
OCI offers a full infrastructure catalog, but a few services define its character:
Resources are organized into compartments inside a tenancy. Compartments are the unit for access policies and cost tracking, so plan them before creating many resources.
OCI uses a pay-as-you-go model by default, with options to commit spend in exchange for discounts through annual contracts. A few features stand out compared with other large providers:
The Always Free tier includes a set of compute instances (including Arm-based Ampere capacity), a limited amount of block and object storage, and Autonomous Database instances, all within fixed limits. It is useful for learning, small personal projects and testing.
There are important details: Always Free compute may be reclaimed if it stays idle, capacity for popular shapes can be limited in some regions, and resources are tied to your home region. Our guide to what Oracle Cloud Always Free includes and where its limits are explains these rules in detail.
| Scenario | Why OCI is a candidate |
|---|---|
| Oracle Database workloads | Autonomous Database, Exadata options and Oracle licensing programs are designed for these |
| Oracle applications (such as E-Business Suite) | Oracle provides migration tooling and reference architectures for its own software |
| High-bandwidth applications | The included outbound transfer allowance can reduce network costs |
| Learning and hobby projects | Always Free resources allow long-running small workloads without charges |
| Multicloud database setups | Oracle offers database services that run inside other major clouds’ data centers |
The console and terminology (tenancies, compartments, shapes, OCPUs) take some adjustment if you come from AWS or Azure. An OCPU, for example, is not always the same unit as a vCPU elsewhere, so compare specifications carefully.
The ecosystem of third-party tutorials and community tooling is smaller than for the three largest clouds, although official documentation is thorough and Terraform support is well established.
Free accounts have practical limits beyond the resource caps. Popular Always Free shapes can show “out of capacity” errors in busy regions, and a trial that is not upgraded reverts to Always Free resources only, which means paid resources created during the trial are stopped or removed. Plan to upgrade to pay-as-you-go before running anything you depend on.
Service limits apply to every tenancy, especially on free and trial accounts. To go beyond them, upgrade to a paid account and submit a service limit increase request from the console.
